Study: Hazardous pesticides from Bayer and BASF – a global trade with double standards

The results of our investigation show: Bayer and BASF – two of the three biggest pesticide producers worldwide – sell pesticides containing active ingredients that are not approved in the EU in the global South. Among these active ingredients are also substances that are explicitly banned in the EU because they are especially hazardous to human health and the environment.

Our study sheds light on the situation in South Africa and Brazil, two of the companies’ main growth markets, and shows how the double standards of the multinationals based in Germany endanger the health of farmworkers in South Africa and indigenous groups in Brazil.

From the concrete research results, the authors of the study conclude demands addressed to the German, South African and Brazilian government as well as to the agrochemical companies.

The study was produced in collaboration with the South African NGO Khanyisa, the Brazilian network Campanha Permanente Contra os Agrotóxicos e Pela Vida (permanent campaign against agrotoxins and in favour of life), MISEREOR and the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung.
