Position paper directed at the German Federal Government: Strengthening agroecology
Poverty, hunger, loss of biodiversity, soil degradation, climate crisis – hundreds of millions of peasants are affected by this. Industrial agriculture threatens the existence of family farms and the natural livelihoods in the global North as well as in the global South. In the position paper “Strengthening agroecology. For a fundamental transformation of agri-food systems” 59 organisations from the fields of environment, development, peasant agriculture, food processing, fair trade and organic farming call upon the German Federal Government to make agroecology the central concept in combatting hunger and poverty and adapting to climate change and to take it as a basis for the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union.
The concept of agroecology is based on scientific results, proven through practical experience and follows a holistic approach. In the paper, the undersigned organisations agree on ten essential elements of agroecology and formulate a detailed list of demands directed at the Federal Government in order to strengthen agroecology at different levels.
